Bishop David Sheppard uses phonics as one of the strategies to teach young children to read.
What is Phonics?
Children begin to learn phonics (sounds) in Early Years both Nursery and Reception. Once children begin learning sounds, these sounds are used orally to identify and make words. They will then begin to learn the letters which make each of the sounds and these are used to read and spell words. For this reason, the first initial sounds that are taught are ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘p’, ‘i’, ‘n’. These can immediately be blended for reading to make simple CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant) e.g. sat, pin. Children then develop segmenting for writing skills; breaking the word into sounds to spell it out.
What is the Phonics Screening Check?
Children in Year 1 throughout the country will all be taking part in a phonics screening check during the week beginning Monday 12th June. Please ensure your child is in every day this week. Children in Year 2 will also take the check if they did not achieve the required result when in Year 1 or they have not taken the test before. The phonics screening check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to their age related expectation .
Thank you very much for ensuring your child attended school that week. Children excelled themselves and I am very proud of their reading! Well done Years 1 and 2!
In maths this half term we have been using our knowledge of the times tables to help solve money problems. Below you can see us using the 5 times tables to help us.
We have also been looking at fractions; working out how to find half and a quarter of an amount and shape. We really enjoyed moving around the stations, investigating and solving the problems with our friends.
We have been reading 'Meerkat Mail' were Sunny the meerkat writes postcards home from visiting his family in lots of different places and have ended the unit becoming authors and illustrators and writing our own!
We have worked very hard on these and they are up on display in class for all to see!
Children in year 1 and 2 enjoyed our trip to Chester Zoo....even with the rain!
Leah Sc "It was funny when the giraffe weed on the floor!"
Mason liked the rhinos because "They had a massive sharp horn on their noses".
Julia "I liked the flamingos because I liked looking at the baby ones, they were cute."
