At Bishop David Sheppard, our children are given a rich cultural, social and historical experience of music through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, composing and performing across a wide variety of styles, historical periods, traditions and musical genres. Children at our school are encouraged to have an active involvement in music making, in order to develop their own sense of personal achievement, self-confidence, and to engage and inspire children to develop a love for music. Music makes a contribution to children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Singing is promoted across the school and develops the children’s ability to sing in tune with other people. Through exposure to live and recorded music, children learn to understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge and experiences to involve themselves in music in a variety of different contexts.
