Disability Awareness Day
Today was Disability Awareness Day. The children met a man called John McCorkell who has had cerebral palsy since birth and runs a company called 'It's all normal' which promotes inclusion.
The children listened to John talk about his life and experiences in an assembly and then took part in a workshop where they got a chance to ask questions and gain an understanding of what it is like to be disabled. He helped the children think about the different ways in which they could communicate by using all of their senses and the challenges that they would encounter if they had a disability.
One of the main messages from John was that we all do things slightly differently to others but we should treat all people the same regardless of our differences.
The children's understanding of our Christian Value of endurance was greatly supported by hearing of the way in which John rises to the challenges he encounters and has to drive himself to achieve success.
Today, we were visited by a Roman soldier. We had such a fantastic day learning all about life in Britain before the Romans invaded and the impact that they had during the expansion of the Roman Empire. We learnt all about the Roman army, food, entertainment, health and hygiene. At the end of the day, we became Roman soldiers and learnt how to form a testudo to protect ourselves from attack. Ask us all about it.
Sports Skills Day
Today, we spent the day developing our team working and sports skills. We all had the opportunity to learn a new sport and find out about the nutrition we need to promote a healthy lifestyle. We worked as four teams to earn points participating in a handball competition and a healthy eating quiz. Although there could only be one winning team, it was fantastic to see the sportsmanship between everyone.
Science - Digestive System
This term, we are learning all about the digestive system. Today, we had fun showing the journey of our food through the body. Ask us all about it.
'The Door' by Miroslav Holub
Year 4, alongside the rest of the school, have been learning the poem 'The Door' by Miroslav Holub. We have used actions and pictures to help us remember it off by heart. We enjoyed performing it as a class and alongside the rest of the school in our special performance assembly.
